For this discussion you will need to choose to look at the either women's roles in the North OR the South. If you select the North, read Source One If you select the South, read Source Two Address the following discussion questions: *Please make sure you state at the beginning of the discussion which region (North or South) you selected to address and use specific examples from your source (quotes, direct examples, etc.) 1. I selected the north. In the north, male and female ministers and scholars expected husbands had legal authority over their wives and children (Hollitz, 258). Women were to be stay-at-home wives, nurture and maintain their families, provide inspiration and religious examples, and affect the world by exercising private moral influence (Hollitz, 256). However, a woman's role in the home was limited in the north. Married women were seen as subordinate to their husbands. Women of the north were not granted legal existence apart from their husbands. Once a woman married, her residence and money became her husband's. Northern women could not sue or create a will when they married. Unmarried women that owned property had to submit taxation without representation documents. However, outside the home, women had minimal interaction with their male counterparts.
